This Diploma will provide students with a safety qualification enabling the graduate to fulfill the role of OHS Officer / Supervisor or Manager in an organization. Students will be taught by real OHS Professionals with a wealth of real life and current experience across a broad section of industry sectors..

Diploma description

  • This Diploma is suitable for people who coordinate and maintain the Work Health and Safety (OHS) program in an organization. It also reflects the role of practitioners who apply a substantial knowledge base and well-developed skills in a wide variety of OHS contexts.
  • The Diploma covers the practical skills that are essential to health and safety professionals. It assesses a learner’s ability to apply their skills and knowledge and deliver positive change throughout the workplace.
  • It is expected that the course will take approximately 450 hours, including the 5-day intensive component, to complete. Students must complete this course within 6 months of enrollment.
  • Depending on individual background, experience and access to resources, the total hours needed to achieve the IBSC Diploma of Work Health and Safety may vary, but all learners need to meet all the requirements as outlined in each unit of competency.
  • To support students’ studies, they will be provided with qualified trainers, learning materials, telephone and email support.
  • NOTE: For an individual student (other than an employer) the Face to Face Diploma Course of $1,950 is to be paid in two (2) separate payments of $1,500 up-front and the remaining $450 upon completion of the course attendance. An employer may pay the full fee of $1,950 upfront however please contact our office to arrange this up front payment..

The key topics covered by the qualification are:

The qualification is divided into four units, each of which is assessed separately:

Unit A Managing health and safety
Unit B Hazardous agents in the workplace
Unit C Workplace and work equipment safety
Unit D Application of health and safety management in the workplace


The syllabus is mapped to the Health and Safety Practitioner units. These are maintained on a database which is managed by Skills Development Scotland www.ukstandards.org.uk/Pages/Search.aspx

Units A, B and C are each assessed by one three-hour written examination consisting of 2 parts. The questions in Part A are all compulsory. For Part B students must answer 3 out of the 5 questions featured on the paper. Candidate scripts are marked by external examiners appointed by IBSC-UK.

Unit D is the final element of the assessment which gives students the opportunity to apply their knowledge in a workplace situation. We have provided further guidance to help students who are completing the Unit D Assignment.

  • Entry requirements

There no formal entry requirements for this qualification, however learners should consider that this is professional level qualification, equivalent to SCQF Level 10. Achievement of the IBSC General Certificate, or direct equivalent, prior to undertaking the Diploma course is highly recommended.

It is also vital that learners have an appropriate standard of English language in order to understand and articulate the concepts contained in the syllabus.

IBSC-UK recommends that learners undertaking this qualification should reach a minimum standard of English equivalent to an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 7.0 or higher in IELTS tests.

Only Diploma learners who have enrolled with IBSC-UK through an accredited learning partner are eligible to register for Diploma examinations and assignments. You must be enrolled before the deadline of the examination you wish to register for. Please contact your learning partner directly to confirm their closing date.

Once your learning partner has registered you to an examination, they will send you an Examination Entry Confirmation that includes your learner number, and important information relating to your examination and results process. Please ensure that you check your name is spelt correctly and report this to your learning partner and IBSC-UK if any changes are required.

The Examination Entry Confirmation is essential to gain entry to the examination room, you will need to show a form of photographic identification to the invigilator and then sign the Examination Entry Confirmation. Please contact your learning partner if you have not received your Examination Entry Confirmation

You will receive your results 12 weeks after your assessment date.

Learners who are successful in an individual unit will be issued with a Unit Certificate, normally within 20 working days of the result notification date. Units are not graded and the unit certificates will show a ‘Pass’ only.

Once a learner has achieved a Pass in all four units and the overall qualification grade awarded, a qualification parchment will be issued, normally within 20 working days of the result notification date

The OHS Diploma program is instructor led and can be completed entirely online or in the classroom.

Online learning is a learning option that caters to busy schedules by taking the learning experience out of the traditional classroom.

In most online courses, you will work within scheduled start- and end-dates, and assignment timelines. Readings, assignments and contributions will be required on a weekly basis. Graded assignments, participation marks, and sometimes exams contribute to your final letter-grade mark.

It is strongly recommended that you log into the IBSC’s online learning software three to four times per week to keep pace with the course, and should plan on studying and working approximately six hours per week per course, on items such as readings and assignments.

Course Duration

Course Assessment

Professional Safety & Health Training Program is assessed by a multiple-choice open book assessment on the last day of the course
